At the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, VMware has announced new edge computing solutions which are part of VMware’s Internet of Things (IoT) strategy.

VMware is putting a lot of effort into edge computing, especially when it comes to connecting the industrial environment, which is what the new edge computing solutions, unveiled at the MWC 2018 event, are all about. These include vSAN hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) software, vSphere, and Pulse IoT Center, all developed in order to provide IoT solutions for unique requirements and environments at the edge.

Aiming at industrial remote IoT use cases, like oil well optimization, utility grids, smart city use cases, factory and plants, branches and in-stores, the new edge computing solutions aim to provide more efficient and more secure IoT infrastructure that will be easy to manage, scale and update, as well as target specific use case needs and environments.

According to Gartner’s report, “by 2022, as a result of digital business projects, 75% of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside the traditional, centralized data center or cloud, which is an increase from less than today’s 10%,” and this is a part of the market that VMware wants to cover with its new edge computing solutions.

VMware has teamed up with Axis Communications and Dell EMC to bring a smart surveillance solution with VMware Pulse IoT Center, which will be able to manage, monitor, and secure Axis Communications cameras and routers and available on certain Dell EMC servers. It is also teaming up with Dell Technologies and Wipro Limited on an IoT solution for manufacturers and asset management services.

“Today, VMware unveils hyper-converged edge computing solutions that are cost-effective and will enable customers to build and scale secure, use case-specific IoT solutions that work for them from the edge all the way to the cloud, relying on proven, tested software they already use and trust,” said Ray O’Farrell, executive vice president & chief technology officer, VMware.

“Together with ecosystem partners Axis, Wipro Limited, and Dell EMC, we’re excited to deliver the first of many tailored solutions to meet the unique IoT needs of our enterprise customers,” he added.
