At The Small Cells World Summit 2018, Qualcomm has introduced the industry’s first 5G NR solution for small cells and remote radio head deployments which support 5G NR in both mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum, the Qualcomm FSM100xx.
As noted, the Qualcomm FSM100x supports both mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum and comes with a software-defined modem which makes it suitable for future upgrades following the 5G standards.
According to Qualcomm, it also supports various interface splits between the central unit (CU) and a remote radio head, allowing operators to use any specific 5G radio access network architecture that fits their needs, including a cloud-oriented virtualized 5G architecture or a more distributed architecture.
Made on the 10nm manufacturing process, or as Qualcomm describes it, with expertise in 10nm mobile technologies for superior power consumption and performance, the new Qualcomm FSM100x solution will allow operators to deploy 5G NR in dense urban areas, both outdoor and indoor, thus eliminating the problem of mmWave building signal penetration.

According to Qualcomm, the FSM100xx solution should start sampling in 2019, while some partners could get on the early access customers list.
